We could see the lead boats on the horizon finishing but were all just drifting slowly without many options. Unfortunately we picked the wrong side of the bay and fell to the back of the pack. This race was supposed to be 600nm long around the Fastnet lighthouse but was shortened due to light wind and a deep low pressure system moving in (they even paused a major IMOCA race with 60ft boats designed to race around the world for this weather).Īfter multiple resets of the fleet due to the wind dropping out across the race course, the final ten miles to the finish decided the race for everyone. All of the series boats finished within 3 hours of each other…after 6 days at sea, unbelievably close! All remaining boats of the 85 who started were within 10 miles of each other coming into the finish.
This might be a record for the closest finish of an offshore race fleet.
